Looking for a fun family outing near Dardenne Prairie? I recently took a short trip to Wright City to visit Big Joel's Safari—and had the chance to chat with the man behind the magic himself, Joel Clinger. From childhood pets to a 40-acre trail expansion in 2025, Joel's story is as wild as the animals he cares for!

What started as a private collection of exotic pets turned into a full-blown safari experience. Joel Clinger shared with me that he’s had animals since he was six years old—starting with a python! As the collection grew, friends and even strangers started showing up to see the animals. Eventually, Joel decided to open the doors to the public, and in 2012, Big Joel's Safari was born.

Located just a short drive from Dardenne Prairie, the park has become a favorite for families in St. Charles County and beyond.

Joel's passion for animals started early. By eighth grade, his family had moved to the countryside and added llamas to the mix. His home became a haven for unique creatures, and his vision for an interactive, educational park became a reality.

Today, Big Joel Safari is home to a wide variety of animals—from reptiles to mammals—and it offers a safe, family-friendly environment where kids can learn and interact with wildlife up close.

Big Joel Safari is expanding again! Joel shared some exciting news with me: they’re currently developing a 40-acre trail ride that will bring a new level of adventure to the park. The roads are being built, the land is being prepped, and Joel is already dreaming up the experience.

This new feature will be perfect for families from Dardenne Prairie and surrounding areas looking for a day trip that’s a little out of the ordinary—and a lot of fun.
