Backyard Chicken Rules in Dardenne Prairie: What Homeowners Need to Know in 2025

Julie Colin

If you’ve been dreaming of backyard chickens in Dardenne Prairie, Missouri—pause that coop construction for just a moment. 🐣

The city’s Board of Aldermen, alongside Mayor Keith Widaman, is working to revise Dardenne Prairie’s ordinances on domesticated animals, and chickens are right in the spotlight.

Why This Matters

In August 2024, the Missouri Governor signed a new law that allows residents across the state to raise chickens—even if their HOA (Homeowners Association) says no. A big win for chicken lovers, right?

Well… not exactly.

The state law overrules HOA restrictions, but it doesn’t override local city ordinances. And in Dardenne Prairie, the existing language around backyard chickens has been vague enough to leave residents scratching their heads.

What’s Happening Now

Fast forward to 2025: City officials are working to clear things up. While the proposed ordinance update isn’t official yet, it’s highly likely to pass soon. If it does, here’s what it will say:

🐔 You’ll need at least one full acre of land to raise chickens within Dardenne Prairie city limits.

So, even if your HOA gives the green light, your property still needs to meet the city’s requirements—or the chickens stay in the dream phase.

What It Means for Homeowners

If you’re looking for a home in St. Charles County and want a few backyard hens, double-check the acreage before you buy—it could make or break your farm-fresh egg dreams.
