In a powerful step toward protecting our most vulnerable, the O’Fallon Fire Protection District has installed the first Safe Haven Baby Box in St. Charles County. This lifesaving addition is designed to give parents in crisis a safe, anonymous way to surrender their newborn—no questions asked.

A Safe Haven Baby Box is a secure, climate-controlled device installed at a fire station, allowing a parent to surrender their baby safely and anonymously. The moment the door closes, fire department staff are immediately alerted and respond within minutes to care for the infant.

This effort is made possible through the Safe Haven Baby Boxes organization, founded in 2016 by Monica Kelsey, who was herself abandoned as a newborn. Her mission is simple but powerful—provide parents with a dignified way to choose life and safety for their child.

• Completely anonymous – No names, no questions

• Climate-controlled to keep the baby safe and comfortable

• Monitored 24/7 by trained first responders

• Baby is never unattended for more than a few minutes

Across the country, there are now more than 200 Safe Haven Baby Boxes in operation. Missouri is proud to be part of that network.

Under current Missouri law, a parent can surrender a baby up to 45 days old without fear of prosecution. Beginning later this month, that window will expand to 90 days. This change gives parents even more time to make a loving, safe decision during a crisis.

The Safe Haven Baby Box in O’Fallon is a quiet, compassionate solution that saves lives. It offers hope to parents who feel they have no other options while ensuring newborns receive immediate care and a chance at a healthy future.
